Explore VPL’s full range of public services—from legal aid and shelters to ESL workshops and career help.
Libraries are essential organs of any thriving city, including Vancouver. For many, the library is a place of solace for hours of dedicated studying for whatever exam looms on the horizon. However, libraries, such as the Vancouver Public Library, offer much more than just categories of literature. Below, you'll find a variety of resources and services provided by the VPL.
Looking for a dentist? Or pointers on how to apply for Employment Insurance? What about contacting your local Member of Parliament (MP) or Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA)? All these resources, along with many more, are available on the VPL website. Need assistance with gambling or a shelter to spend the night? These resources are available to anyone who needs them. Other websites listed on the VPL site directly lead you to resources, including Legal Aid B.C. and the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and links to Victim Services. The VPL is your go-to hub for accessing information on queries, questions, and concerns.
The VPL offers a range of services for Indigenous Peoples. From learning more about Indigenous community-based services and organizations to a guide created by the Lu'ma Native Housing Society on things to know before moving to Vancouver, there are options and ways to connect with these organizations. There is also the handy 211 British Columbia site, which makes finding these resources simpler than before and is available on the VPL website as well.
Through various VPL branches, multiple courses and workshops are available for those seeking to start a new hobby or pursue a passion. These include writing consultations, as well as Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and Service Canada clinics that provide face-to-face help with government staff to aid with everything from notices of assessments to tax slips. Other workshops include learning about Indigenous Reconciliation, Resume Clinics, Premiere Pro editing, ESL learning, and learning to use a sewing machine, among others. These classes and workshops are all free to register for.
Free movie nights? Yes, please. From classic to contemporary and featuring family-friendly films, VPL branches regularly host free movie nights that turn the library into your own mini-movie theatre experience. For book lovers, enjoy reading circles — both virtual and in-person — to connect with fellow readers, including teens and adults alike. There are book circles offered in Mandarin with support in Cantonese.
The VPL provides more than you might think. Whether it's emotional support, community connection, or new creative skills to try out, there's much to discover. No library card is required.
