Bad Terms
Fireworks and B.C. Place have had somewhat of a rocky past, so when Taylor Swift’s iconic Eras Tour rolled into town there was much speculation over whether the stunning fireworks that typically light up the concert inside the stadium would be permitted.
Live and let… Fly?
B.C. Place used to allow performers to light fireworks inside the stadium, until a certain British rockstar blew the roof off (somewhat literally).
When legend Paul McCartney brought his On the Run Tour he closed out the show with his iconic Live and let Die, accompanied by fireworks.
Pricey repair
A spokesperson for B.C. Place said that “the fireworks actually hit an acoustic fiberglass liner that hangs about one to four metres below the retractable roof, leaving scorch marks on at least two panels.” The retractable roof cost a staggering $458M and construction had just been completed.
McCartney and his tour were reportedly held responsible for paying the damage as they calibrated the height of the fireworks incorrectly, but it’s no shock that B.C. Place was in no hurry to light off any fireworks after that.
Consolation prize
Even recently, superstars like Coldplay have been prohibited from lighting off fireworks when they brought their Music of the Spheres World Tour to B.C. Place in 2023. T
o make it up to excited fans who were looking forward to the grand finale, the band brought out Canadian legend Bryan Adams for a special performance of his song “Everything I Do (I Do It For You)”.
We have liftoff!
Given the stadium’s past prohibition of fireworks, there was much speculation as to whether the final shows of the Eras Tour would be able to sign off with its signature bang.
However, much to the delight of eager Swifties, somehow the Eras Tour was able to not only light off fireworks but shoot off tall flames during Bad Blood that momentarily warmed the stadium.
Worth the risk?
Whether she got special permission from B.C. Place or struck some sort of deal is unknown, but lucky fans who got to experience the show were nothing short of delighted.
Do you think this should be motivation for B.C. Place to loosen up its restrictions or should we just be grateful there are no holes in the roof?
