NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has resigned his position after losing his seat in the Burnaby Central riding.
While declaring the Liberals an elected minority government, New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh resigned after unsuccessfully claiming his seat within the Burnaby Central riding.
Singh was first elected in the formerly known Burnaby South riding in a by-election held in 2019 and was re-elected again in 2021. The 2025 election was his third federal run. The support for the NDP party fell to about 13 per cent, a staggering shift from the 29 per cent they held in 2021.
In a speech delivered late on April 28 at Singh's campaign headquarters in Burnaby, he messaged his supporters that he would step down as party leader after Liberal party candidate Wade Chang won the Burnaby Central riding.
Through not cinching the elected spot, Singh emphasized that he is remaining on "Team Canada" and opposing President Donald Trump where he can.

It's been the honour of my life to lead the NDP, and to represent the people of Burnaby Central. Congratulations to Prime Minister Carney, and to all the other leaders on a hard-fought campaign. I know this night is disappointing for New Democrats. 🧵
