Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) is one of Vancouver’s most beloved summer traditions, bringing exciting theatre productions to the open air of Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl. This year, from now until August 16th, audiences are invited to enjoy musical productions of ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and ‘Legally Blonde’.
Outlet Vancouver attended opening night of Legally Blonde and you can find our review HERE. It was such an incredible show, that we decided to also attend Charlie and the Chocolate factory the other night and have another review to share with you - outlining the experience and why we believe you should grab a ticket before they are gone!
Theatre Under the Stars’ production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Vancouver delivered a visually stunning experience with truly innovative set designs, clever props, and vibrant costumes.
The set design had clever moving parts that seamlessly transitioned between scenes in creative ways. At one point, what appeared to be a flat, one-dimensional backdrop rolled onstage - but then the actors shocked us by opening real drawers that had only looked drawn on or fake. Later on, there were more surprises when compartments were pulled from the set and used as steps for actors to safely come down to the stage after sitting on top of the rolling set. A small but impressive detail that showcased the thoughtful engineering behind the production. As the show went on, the set design only got more interesting and intricate - especially in act two when you enter the chocolate factory!
Smaller props were another highlight, bringing both humour and functionality to the show. Willy Wonka’s staff or cane, for example, doubled as a microphone, subtly altering his voice whenever he spoke into it which added to both the character and the production value. Throughout the performance, the props helped elevate the story, adding a layer of creativity and fun for the audience to appreciate.
The costumes also truly helped to bring the world of Wonka to life, giving each character a unique look that matched their personality and role in the story. It flawlessly tied everything together and was a standout that clearly proves that immense thought and planning went into all elements of this production.
One of the most heartwarming aspects of this production was the diverse age range of the cast. From enthusiastic kids to seasoned seniors, it was a joy to watch performers of all ages share the stage with such energy and professionalism.
The younger performers, especially the Oompa Loompas, stole many of the scenes with their humour and charm. They brought lightness and wit to the production, making each of their appearances something to look forward to. While there were moments that carried the charming hallmarks of community theatre, the overall level of talent, professionalism and commitment was impressive. It’s clear that everyone involved is passionate about their craft and dedicated to putting on a memorable show night after night through the summer.
Lastly, a major stand out was how strongly executed things were by the crew. It was impressive when they were seamlessly syncing up the lighting, effects, and sounds with the choreography and storyline scenes. The entire production was truly elevated by the high-quality production team. The result that they executed was a colourful, polished, and dynamic experience that felt professional from start to finish. Whether it was a full energetic cast dance scene on the stage or a calm magical moment between just Charlie and Willy Wonka on an elevated platform with the nights stars projected around them - it was truly the most impressive part of the show.
Personally, I have never watched Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in full. But nonetheless, the storyline was easy to follow and thoroughly enjoyable as a new viewer. The production was packed with iconic songs that were immediately recognizable, even to a non-fan - and it was clear from the audience singing along that this show draws longtime true-fans of the story.
Whether you’re familiar with Wonka’s world or experiencing it for the first time, the production makes it easy to get swept up in the magic. It’s whimsical, lighthearted, and perfect for all ages. If you want something fun, family-friendly, and full of nostalgia, this show delivers.
If you’re planning to attend Theatre Under the Stars at Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl, a little preparation goes a long way. First, bring bug spray - the mosquitos can get relentless, especially as the evening goes on. A blanket is also a smart idea if you’re wearing shorts - just to keep your skin covered. Once the sun sets, the temperature can drop quickly, so having a hoodie or light jacket will keep you comfortable.
If you want to make an entire evening out of TUTS, consider arriving early and packing a picnic to eat on the lawn outside the venue! We saw plenty of people do this around Stanley Park, and it sets a lovely, relaxed tone for the night. You can also wait till the doors open at 7pm if you want to grab dinner at the concession stands inside. They have some delicious options that are well priced, and picnic benches Inside to relax on before heading to your assigned seats for the show. We also recommend grabbing a hot chocolate for $4 during intermission - not only to heat up when the sun is setting, but also to be on theme with the chocolate factory magic!
Lastly, if you’d like a program or a seat cushion for added comfort, don't forget to bring a small cash donation. These little extras can make the experience even more enjoyable.
Theatre Under the Stars’ Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a must-see for anyone craving live entertainment, laughter, and a little nostalgia. This show was also a little shorter than Legally Blonde, so if you are bringing the kids (or want some nostalgia for your inner child), this is the show for you!
